Hong Kong |
We moored on the Kowloon side of the between Hong Kong /Kowloon harbor at 7:00 AM. What a difference in both Hong Kong and Kowloon since I was last here in 2001. Hong Kong and Kowloon were bristling with new high rise buildings and Condos. We watched the area wake up as we waited for the ship to clear customs so we could go ashore.
About 10:30 we were ready to go and a group of us headed to Maxims for Dim Sum. We finally found the restaurant on the second floor of the City Hall building. Maxims is a single room restaurant about half the size of a football field, or so it looked, with crystal chandeliers and white table cloths. Dim Sum carts hurried between tables, non-Chinese speaking customers pointing out the items they on the carts they wished to order according the pictures on the side of the carts or just because an item looking interesting. Everything was delicious and all of us were filled to the gills.

After lunch we decided to just stroll around Hong Kong and through some of the many small street markets that operate on the side streets. The shops in these marked sell everything you can think of from food, clothing and souvenirs to building and office supplies. Julie found a shop that specialized in scrimshaw carvings made from Mammoth tusks that were found somewhere in China. She found and purchased two small Buddha figurines.

In the evening we took the tram to the top of Victoria Peek. This is the highest mountain in Hong Kong and affords a spectacular view of Hong Kong and Kowloon. About 8:00 or when it gets dark, the building in both cities put on a light show by using laser lights on top of the buildings and lights on the sides of the buildings that are turned on and off to make patterns. It is wonderful to see. We could see a couple of buildings lit up with Season Greeting and snowflake lights. After the show we road down the mountain, had dinner and headed for the ship for the night.
